China initiative in Software and BPO offers an Opportunity and a Threat...Which will it be for the Philippines?

(October 28, 2005 - GlobalSourcingNow) - The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has announced a list of measures aimed at promoting the country's software export and BPO industry. The measures were announced at the Second Xi'an International BPO Forum. The Ministry has also outlined a six point agenda for export promotion in the software export and BPO sectors. It includes increased cooperation with existing leaders like the US, India, Ireland; plans to develop and aid the development of a large talent pool and also improve on the existing infrastructure. The ministry has also stressed on the need to cultivate a more favorable business environment for facilitating more joint ventures in the sector.

(Comment from O2P: Here they come!! It would be nice if the list of countries they intend to work with would include the Philippines. There will be no stopping the Chinese once they get going, and we should be in the picture as a major player. What about our Taipans and their Chinese connections? I went to Xiamen last year, and was greeted at the airport by a big "SM" logo. The Filipino-Chinese community can play an important role in developing the network for our ITeS sector to partner with Chinese companies. True, a number of Filipino data services companies have facilities and/or relationships in China, but that is mostly to accomodate the cost arbitrage factor. We should climb the value chain with Chinese companies as our partners. Perhaps a dialog between BPA/P and PSIA with the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and other business associations would be a good first step.)
