Data Theft in India is a warning flag for the Philippines
(October 28, 2005 - GlobalSourcingNow) - Two employees of an Indian
BPO firm located near New Delhi have been arrested on charges of data
theft. Incidentally, the firm handled a process for UK-based City
Credit and both the accused are British nationals.
(Comment from O2P: This is the great cloud that overhangs the call
center/BPO sector. The issue of data security can be a "show-stopper",
and it is up to the industry associations, the companies in the business,
and the Philippine government to deal pro-actively with the problem.
It will be much better for us to anticipate problems, and to spend
money in preventing issues from arising, than to lick our wounds when
there are cases of data theft in our country. The law should both
provide protection and act as a deterrent. The should be industry
initiatives, including a centralized data base of employees removed
for cause. There should be a large-scale PR initiative that focuses
on honesty in the work place. There are many measures that can be
taken to address this "mother of all issues", giving us
the opportunity to distinguish the Philippines from the others and
to show to our clients abroad that the country is serious in preventing
data theft.)
